GOLDEN YEARS let’s talk
story by Lynn Lofton and Kelsey Sunderman photos by Teddy Lewis
Whatever the definition of the Golden
Years is, it can be a time of activities and
self fulfillment. What better place to spend these years — retired or not — than South Mississippi? Options for social activities, living arrangements, community service and health care abound here. To celebrate these years, South Mississippi Living brought a group of community activists together to discuss a variety of topics.
Participants included Joshua Bruce, executive director, Canon Hospice; Cindy Habeeb, membership services director, Singing River HealthPlex; Mark Borchelt, M.D., Memorial Endocrinology Clinic; Jerry Conerly, sales representative with Mutual of Omaha Insurance; Ginni McCann and Beth Ousley, hometown ambassadors with the Harrison County Development Commission’s retiree program.
M2 Media Corporation President Michael Sunderman welcomed the group and served as moderator.
WORDS OF ADVICE
Mark Borchelt: Pay attention to your health — physical and emotional — stay active, and encourage the support of family and friends.
Beth Ousley: I could give a lot of advice but the main thing is to use these years as a time of self fulfillment. Jerry Conerly: Take care of your health, see a doctor regularly, eat right and exercise so that you are able to answer health questions when it comes to qualifying for insurance. Most people make the mistake of underinsuring, especially for longterm care.
Ginni McCann: To quote Bob Dylan, the times are a changin’ so realize that life is full of choices and make them while you can. Make those hard decisions for yourself and get rid of your junk before someone else has to deal with it.
Joshua Bruce: Keep in mind that you don’t want your children to have to make decisions for you. You know what you want so figure it out and put it in writing early.
Cindy Habeeb: Eat healthy, exercise, keep an active mind and stay social.
