are somewhat offensive to their sensible side. But once convinced to try a new direction, men do tend to spend money more easily on quality furniture and accessories. They have strong opinions when it comes to art, often opting for big, bold pieces. They like consoles that provide storage for electronic gadgets and for holding sentimental artifacts. And they do appreciate simple lines and “unfussiness” when it comes to almost everything.
So, here’s the dilemma. Do you want to know what the man in your life is thinking? If the two of you are on the same page most of time, it can be so much fun to discover new pieces and decorate a home together. But we have also seen women find something they are so excited about, and they are so disappointed when their husbands don’t like it.
Here’s a suggestion: Ask what his thoughts are in general before you ever go shopping or make a lot of decisions so when you see something new, you know if it is going to be way out of his wheelhouse. Or do your thing and realize that he probably doesn’t care as much as you do about the how your home is decorated. Don’t expect your husband to confirm your decisions or fall in love with something the way you did. He will probably be happy because you are. And if he says the result
of your efforts is “okay” or better, we call that a win! Take it.
You don’t hear the term “bachelor pad” much anymore. The mystique of a man creating a seductive lair has faded. Men and women are staying single longer and we are used to each other having our own places. Another term, the “man cave,” has become part of our everyday vernacular. Men still want some space to express their masculinity even after they are married. And that is the other option you have on the table. Find some space in your home that belongs exclusively to your man. Let him do his thing. Some men have the garage for toys and tools and others have the closet, game room, or outdoor grilling area they call theirs. Let them have it. Just close the door and call it good.
