2017 BEST OF SHOW AWARD MARSHALL ALBRITTON
Albritton, who paints every day, retired to North Carolina after working in the family gravel/
earth moving business. Although he studied art in college, he didn’t do much painting during his working years. Painting with
soil and minerals seemed like the natural thing to do, and he’s been doing it for nine years. “I’ve been dealing with dirt all my life and I knew what could be done with
it,” he says.“You get such vibrant colors from soil and minerals. Most people don’t know that you can crush stones for pure pigment.”
Each of Albritton’s works is original along with the frames
he makes from reclaimed wood. At this year’s festival he will have frames made from Mississippi heart pine. “I love Mississippi and this festival,” he said.“Winning just blew me away; to win out of all those vendors.”
On Sunday afternoon of the festival, winners received plaques complete with Shearwater
tiles and cash prizes. The items were displayed at the winners’ booths for the remainder of the afternoon.
Award winners for this year’s 40th annual festival will be presented on Sunday afternoon, November 4, the second day of the event.
