like spicy foods? No problem. Want something so hot your nose will run? They can do that too. And if it’s still not hot enough, there’s a bottle of hot sauce on the table, so have at it.
Served with every meal are a selection of homemade sides, which include cucumber, cabbage, sweet radish and spicy radish kimchis, bean sprouts and an imitation crabmeat salad. The kimchis are a definite favorite. Traditionally these are made of vegetables fermented with a selection of seasonings, sugar, garlic and ginger.
Rachel is more adventurous than I am and orders something different every time she visits R & C. This time she ordered the B-Bim Bop, which is rice topped with beef, vegetables and a fried egg, and served with pepper sauce. We also ordered the Kim Bop, a Korean sushi roll, as an appetizer. What set the Korean version apart from its Japanese equivalent was the presence of marinated beef (in this case, very similar to
the Bul Go Gi I ordered) and pickled radishes alongside
the cucumber, imitation crab sticks and other traditional ingredients wrapped in seaweed and rice. R & C also makes their own soy sauce, which is much better than any you can buy in stores.
A visit to R & C isn’t complete without a trip
next door to the Korean
& Japanese Food Market. While unaffiliated with R & C, the market does carry an assortment of fresh kimchi from R & C if you want to snag some for later. They also sell authentic beverages and snacks, such as sushi grade rice, udon, ramen, Asian cookies and candy. Some of our favorite drinks we tried were the Sangaria Royal Milk Tea, a black tea blend infused with – you guessed it – milk, and the Lotte 2% Peach Water, which is imported from South Korea.
Both locations are a treat for your taste buds, and a visit is highly suggested. Consider it Biloxi’s own version of New York’s Koreatown.
