RECYCLING Unveiled at Harrison County Sand Beach story and photo by Kelsey Sunderman-Foster
Turtle
The beachfront east of Jones Park has a new resident: a mobile recycling turtle. The project is a collaboration among the Harrison County Board of Supervisors, Harrison County Beautification Commission, Mississippi Aquarium, Roy Anderson Corp Contractors, and the Career and Technical Education Program at Gulfport High School.
The idea was to find a new and interactive way to keep Gulf Coast beaches clean, a task that the recycling turtle accomplished in a fun – and uniquely coastal – way. Roy Anderson Corp provided the materials and Gulfport High
School provided the workforce. “The students have been
working for more than eight months to prepare this project for our community and are very excited to showcase
their efforts,” said Kendra Simpson, Mississippi Aquarium vice president of sales and marketing.
Gulfport High senior Cobi Pepperman said, “I think
it is great we get to make something that is going to be affecting the community as well. Not only does it benefit
us by giving us something to do and learn more, it also benefits the community by adding
a beautiful structure to the beach.”

Winter Interlude is an inaugural event benefitting the Gulf Coast Symphony Orchestra on January 11
at White Pillars in Biloxi. Between
the hours of 6 and 9 p.m. guests will enjoy the restaurant’s notable cuisine, musical entertainment and a cork pull.
Co-chairs Diane Kiser and Susan Pollard promise an elegant evening in this historic landmark.
“With Winter Interlude, the Symphony Guild hopes to brightly reflect timeless beauty and joy,”
Kiser said. “All money raised goes to support our local Symphony, which is a treasure for the entire Coast.”
In addition to the yearly concert season and youth orchestra, the
Gulf Coast Symphony partners
with Carnegie Hall to bring musical opportunities to elementary school children. “That can identify those with the gift and passion for music at a young age and some children will continue through their high school years as a member of the youth orchestra,” Pollard said. “GCSO supports talent with mentoring, financial assistance, and performance opportunities. Let’s ensure the future of music on our Coast.”
Tickets may be purchased from
Guild members, at
the Symphony office, or online.
