“We have a piece of Biloxi history,” Summer Canon said, “and we are proud to be a part of maintaining it; we love it.”
The front door opens into a foyer with bright green paint, wainscoting and fancy molding that set the tone for what’s
to come. While remaining true to its history, the home has a bit of a modern vibe going on with cheerful paint colors, some metallic wallpaper and an open concept in the main living area of family room, dining room and kitchen. A brick- faced bar/island sets the kitchen apart. The Canons, who’ve owned the home almost four years, added a fireplace and bookshelves to the family room.
The master bedroom has a soothing neutral color scheme. An example of Summer’s creativity is her use of a china cabinet — usually reserved for dining rooms — as a linen closet in the master bathroom.
Nine-year-old Cayden’s room has lots of bright colors along with a painted wood floor and natural wood ceiling.
Known as the big house on Seal, the home has a connection to another
historic Biloxi landmark, the home of Jefferson Davis. The Seal Avenue home was purchased by the second wife of Jefferson Davis, Varina, in 1902 for $1,800.00. Varina moved furnishings from the historic Beauvoir into the house. In 1903, Varina sold the house to her niece, Margaret Green Davis, for $1.00. From then until recently, the house has been home to a number of families.
