The inaugural Gulf Coast Marathon was held the second weekend of December and plans are to make it an annual event. There were 3,300 participants registered for all events during the weekend, representing 44 states and Canada.
“This first race went tremendously well and exceeded our expectations,” Race Director Jonathan Dziuba said. “We want to thank
all the volunteers, law enforcement officers, cities and their public works employees.”
Using the six-year-old Baton Rouge Marathon as a benchmark, Gulf
Coast Marathon officials expect an economic impact for Mississippi of $20 million over five years. “The Baton Rouge Marathon raised
$17 million for five years, and the Mississippi Marathon raised more in the first year than Baton Rouge did in their first year.”
