hether they’re long time runners or individuals wanting to get in better shape, more and more people are accepting the challenge of participating in marathons. However, training is
vitally important before signing up for a race.
Run-n-Tri owner Dean Morrow says there is no age or health
criteria required as long as an athlete has a physician’s permission. He has been a runner 30 years and has been training others for 10 years. “In addition to their doctor’s permission, they also need a strong will, good pair of running shoes and shorts, and hopefully a good running coach or partner,” he says. “I have trained athletes from 8 to 70 years of
age. The first thing I ask someone is ‘are
you ready for a difficult, yet rewarding
endeavor?’”
How fit does someone need to be? “That depends on the results they are trying to obtain,” Morrow said. “Some people walk the entire race in about seven and a half hours; some elite athletes run the race in two hours and five minutes.”
A normal training plan for a marathon can range from 20 to 24 weeks with with elite athletes training 11 months out of the year to accomplish their goals, he added.
According to competition.com, the following are five common training mistakes:
1. Selecting an arbitrary goal time
2. Not practicing race day nutrition
in training
3. Panicking after a bad workout
4. Not increasing nutritional intake
for recovery
5. Not practicing pacing techniques.
