“After losing our home on the South Side of Diamondhead in Hurricane Katrina, we didn’t want to build back there,” Robin Copeland said. “We own the Purple Banana frozen yogurt shop next door and wanted to build next to it. Everyone thought we were crazy, but we got a variance from the city council.”
The house has 1,200 square
feet of living space — 1,500 with the porches — and every inch is designed for livability, beginning with the front porch with its coastal blue accents. The front door opens into the living space where a bistro table and chairs perfect for a tête-à-tête sit to the right and a built-in bar beckons just ahead. Here and throughout the home colorful marine accessories and art work are used. The sitting area of this space is relaxing with white leather sofas and small punches of color that help set the mood. A large wooden beam across the ceiling delineates the living room from the kitchen.
A nice amount of space is devoted to the kitchen because “she’s a very good cook,” Al says about his wife. “Most of the kitchen is the way it is because she said it had to be that way.”
The teal blue accents — including the leather bar stools around the center island — keep the kitchen from being all white and gray.

the utilitarian cabinets. Many cooks might consider the pantry the kitchen’s best feature. The word ‘pantry’ is etched in the glass above the double doors to announce that this is indeed a pantry. Open them and in addition to shelves for food and supplies, there are plug ins for small appliances — a handy spot for the coffee maker and toaster.
