2. CAT ISLAND
Cat Island in Mississippi got its name because early French explorers mistook the abundance of raccoons on the island for cats.
3. WHITE HOUSE HOTEL
Built in the 1890s as a Biloxi residence, the home of Walter and Cora White transitioned into the White House Hotel, a popular destination for visitors to “America’s Riviera” in the 1920s. The Hotel’s restaurant, Cora’s, is named in honor of Cora White.
4. LAPOINTE-KREBS HOUSE
Step inside history at the LaPointe-Krebs House, built in 1757 during the French Colonial era. Recognized as the oldest scientifically dated building in Mississippi— and possibly the oldest home between the Appalachians and Rockies—it’s a rare glimpse into the past. Explore the only remaining tabby concrete structure on the Coast and discover centuries of stories at the LaPointe-Krebs Museum.
Coastal Tips: While Cat Island historically served as a haven for pirates and smugglers and later the site of a war dog training center during WWII, you can still visit the island today via private boat.
