Dear Mr. Gregory:
On behalf of Visit Mississippi, the state’s tourism agency and a division of the Mississippi Development Authority, I am pleased to provide this letter of support for the Mississippi Gaming & Hospitality Association. The casino gaming industry has played a crucial role in shaping Mississippi’s tourism landscape since its inception. Our state boasts a unique blend of gaming, hospitality, and cultural experiences that attract millions of visitors each year.
Tourism in Mississippi had a record year and remains the state’s fourth-largest industry, with gaming and hospitality as a driving force in Mississippi’s tourism economy. In 2023, the state welcomed more than 43.7 million visitors who spent $11.5 billion, and the industry generated $1.1 billion for Mississippi’s General Fund. The casino industry generates substantial revenue for the state, contributing to job creation, tax revenues, and overall tourism impact.
The tourism industry in Mississippi employees more than 133,000 people in visitor-supported jobs. Gaming supports a significant percentage of those employees, both directly within the casinos and indirectly through related sectors such as hospitality, retail, and transportation. This ripple effect enhances the livelihoods of many Mississippians and fosters a thriving economy.
Casino gaming is a key driver of tourism, attracting visitors not only for gaming but also for the diverse range of amenities and attractions that accompany it. The presence of casinos enhances our state’s appeal as a travel destination, encouraging visitors to explore our rich cultural heritage, natural beauty, and culinary delights. The synergy between gaming and tourism has proven to
be mutually beneficial, resulting in increased hotel occupancy rates, restaurant patronage, and attraction visits.
As we look to the future, it is essential that we continue to foster a collaborative relationship between the Mississippi Gaming Commission and tourism stakeholders. By working together, we can ensure that the gaming sector remains a cornerstone of our state’s economic growth and cultural vibrancy.
In conclusion, I would like to express our gratitude for the Mississippi Gaming Commission’s ongoing efforts to regulate and promote the gaming industry. We at Visit Mississippi are committed to leveraging the strengths of the casino gaming sector to enhance tourism and community development across the state. We look forward to continuing our strong relationship.
Thank you,
Rochelle Hicks
