An Alcorn State University alumna is in the driver’s seat to enforce change in her community.
Dr. LeKeshia Myers, a Milwaukee, Wisconsin resident and native, was elected to the Wisconsin State Assembly (House of Represen- tatives) in November 2018. Myers defeated longtime Milwaukee legislator, Fred Kesslar in the August primary election.
e momentum of Myers’s campaign, “A New Voice. A New Vi- sion” resonated with the audience, which is what led to her victory. Dr. Myers is proud of her new achievement, and she applauds her campaign team for their dedication to spreading her message.
“Winning the primary felt great,” said Myers, who earned a bache- lor’s degree in political science in 2006. “During my campaign, my team and I needed to convey to voters that I have the energy and foresight to do the job well.”
Serving as an instructional coach at James Groppi High School in Milwaukee roused Myers’ interest in pursuing a political position.
She feels that her experience in the school system has given her the necessary tools to inspire success amongst her community’s youth.
“Being an educator for over ten years has helped me to understand the role that government plays in educational and societal outcomes. School funding formulas are regulated by the state legislature, as is teacher licensing. To improve the outcomes for students in our com- munity, we must have adequate representation. Who better than a teacher to lead the charge when these issues are being discussed? My goal is to be a voice for people who many times go unheard.”
Now that Myers has secured her seat at Milwaukee’s political table, she has her sights set on accomplishing a few goals that would ben- e t multiple areas in her community.
“I plan to improve the district by increasing the number of goods and services available to residents of the district. I also hope to ex- pand teacher licensing options to attract and retain quality educa- tors. I also would like to improve the Department of Corrections.”
