Employees get kick out of playing ball
VICKSBURG — What started out a kickball in the back yard with mom, dad and daughter turned into a league comprised of teams from the four Vicksburg casinos, and even an all-star game involving players from those teams and a team from the Mississippi Gaming Commission.
Jennifer Curro, Bally’s marketing director, is the mom who got the kickball rolling. She believed the fun she had playing kickball with her husband, Greg, and daughter, Lily, should be experienced by others.
She suggested the concept of a casino league to Mickey Fedell, Bally’s player development manager. Fedell liked Curro’s idea so much he got on the phone with Sports Force Park to set it in motion.
Area casinos got involved, teams were assembled, fields were booked and officials were lined up. Soon, the concept became a reality and a league was formed comprised of teams from Ameristar Casino Hotel, Riverwalk Casino Hotel, WaterView Casino Hotel and Bally’s Vicksburg.
The teams played in a summer casino tournament and later, last fall, players from each team participated in the all-star game. Although Ameristar Casino won the tournament and the Mississippi Gaming Commission prevailed in the all-star match, the fun and camaraderie experienced by all made everyone a winner.
All four Vicksburg casinos participated in the kickball tournament, including a team from WaterView Casino Hotel.
