Blues Review at Pearl River Resort
CHOCTAW — See the Blues Review featuring Nellie Travis and Bigg Robb at Pearl River Resort’s Silver Star Hotel & Casino at 8 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 14. Doors open at 7 p.m.
Bigg Robb is a high-spirited artist who em- braces Midwest funk, modern blues, contempo- rary gospel, and Southern soul. Having started as a young radio DJ, he was an associate of the late Roger Troutman, the funk and R&B hit-maker who founded the Zapp band. Troutman pro- vided crucial early support to Robb. Bigg Robb drew from years of experience in the music in- dustry to launch a successful solo career.
Nellie “Tiger” Travis couldn’t be more des-
tined to sing the blues. She was born deep in
the delta of Mississippi in the early ‘60s. As in
most small towns, the church was a main focal
point and Nellie grew up singing gospel music. Since then, Nellie has come a long way and in November 2009 was crowned the New
Queen Of The Blues for Chicago by Bluesman Purvis Spann, who also bestowed that honor on Ms. KoKo Taylor, the original Queen. KoKo was a mentor and friend to Nellie, and when she passed in
early 2009, Nellie used her talented song writing skills to write and record a tribute song to her friend titled “KoKo, Queen Of The Blues.”
Nellie Travis has headlined at the Chicago Blues Festival and performed at numerous fes- tivals and clubs around the world in such places as Japan, Greece, Italy, Germany, Brazil, as well as her hometown of Mississippi. She has shared the stage with such greats as Buddy Guy, B.B. King, Koko Taylor, Gladys Knight, Ronnie Baker Brooks, to name a few. She has been influ- enced by many powerful performers such as Big
Mama Thornton, KoKo Taylor and Etta James. Tickets may be purchased through the Pearl River Resort website
by visiting pearlriverresort.com or call (866) 44PEARL.
