GENDER REPRESENTATION
Progress Towards Balance
Our scholarship awards continue to support a predominantly female student population, reflecting broader trends in higher education enrollment, while also showing progress in male representation.
• Female recipients comprise the majority of our scholars, increasing to 1,753 (a 10.2% increase). This aligns with national trends where women consistently enroll and graduate from college at higher rates than men (NCES, 2023).
• Encouragingly, male recipients also saw a substantial increase, growing to 896 (a 16.8% increase). This growth suggests progress towards balancing gender representation within our scholarship program.
SCHOLARSHIP BY AREA OF STUDY
Our scholarship program is significantly impacting students in fields critical to national economic growth and innovation, supporting a total of 2,718 recipients across all areas of study, a 14% increase in recipients awarded. The largest concentrations of recipients are consistently in science (26.4%) and business (25.6%), followed by engineering (10%) and technology (8%).
The increase in science recipients (16.6%) and technology recipients (11%) aligns with national priorities for STEM education and workforce development (National Science Foundation, 2023). We also saw remarkable growth in recipients studying agriculture (47.2% increase to 78 recipients) and education (33.3% increase to 60 recipients), indicating a broadening impact in essential sectors.
• Black students earn about 7% of all STEM bachelor’s degrees, despite being 12% of the U.S. population (Pew Research Center, 2021).
• Black professionals represent about 9% of the STEM workforce (Pew Research Center, 2021).
• ResearchunderscorestheimportanceofHBCUs in STEM leadership—investing in research capacity, AI and emerging technologies to diversify the workforce of the future (Gasman, 2024; WCET, 2024).
With nearly half of scholars in STEM, TMCF’s investment far exceeds national averages, advancing diversity in fields critical to U.S. innovation and competitiveness.
