Be the Boss of Your Wardrobe
Close your eyes and take yourself inside your closet
in your mind’s eye. Open the doors. What do you see?
Organization, beauty, and inspiration? Or do you open
it and think, “This is a bunch of jumbled chaos with so
much stuff in there that I can’t decide what to wear without
shuffling through everything”?
Take a step back. Just as you’re good
at managing important matters
for efficiency and successful
outcomes, you should use those
same management skills with
your clothes. Proper management produces positivity and
profit, right?
Now, erase that chaotic closet mental picture and start
over with a strategic wardrobe communications plan.
Even though you know you’re a treasure chest of value,
expertise, and creativity, the outside business world doesn’t
necessarily see or appreciate it if you don’t
effectively and visually publicize those
characteristics. Think of your working
wardrobe as your personal public
relations department. Properly worn,
your clothes speak volumes.
Reward Trusted Pieces
As a company rewards employees of
the month, so should you as a good
wardrobe manager. Level up everyday
clothing workhorses like basic pants, tops,
skirts, and jackets in neutral colors by
honoring them with colorful accessories,
scarves, handbags and shoes. It’s a way of
thanking and showcasing them for loyalty
and work well done.
Conduct a Wardrobe Downsizing
When necessary, businesses downsize
to cut costs, adapt to new market trends,
eliminate duplication, and increase
efficiency. The same reasons hold true
for wardrobe efficiency. Though often a
difficult task, retiring or firing all items of
clothing that no longer fit, are outdated,
or don’t reflect your current lifestyle or
workstyle is what a good wardrobe boss
must do. So, take a breath, put emotional
attachment aside, and do the right thing—
ditch or donate everything that doesn’t
make you feel comfortable or confident on
the job.
