About This Issue
January always feels like a breath of fresh air—a moment to reset after the holiday rush and step into a new year with renewed energy. It also brings one of my favorite editions of the year: our Faces of South Mississippi issue. Each January, we shine a light on some of the Coast’s most recognizable leaders while introducing a few new faces you’ll be glad to meet.
Inside, you’ll find stories that reflect the heart of our community, from celebrated professionals to the behind- the-scenes innovators shaping daily life along the Coast. We hope you enjoy getting to know them as much as we did.
Our cover features the Faces of Alignment, Dr. Mark Shuttleworth and Dr. Jeremy Jernigan—two chiropractors who recently joined forces to bring a combined century
of experience to the Gulf Coast. Their partnership proves that true alignment goes far deeper than the spine (though they certainly have that covered).
One of my favorite pieces this month is our Arts feature, a look at the Walter Anderson Museum of Art’s winter student show. Students from kindergarten through 12th grade were invited to explore the theme “Walter Anderson Reimagined,” reinventing his iconic work through their own creative lens. Bold colors, playful reinterpretations, and delightfully unexpected perspectives filled the gallery—and choosing just a few favorites to feature was no easy task.
If you missed this exhibition, the next student show arrives in May with the theme “Paradise Found,” inspiring young artists to depict their own personal sanctuaries, much like Horn Island was for Walter Anderson. Submissions are due March 20, with details coming soon at walterandersonmuseum.org.
Rounding out the issue, South Mississippi Living publishers Mary and Michael Sunderman share their story and heartfelt gratitude for the readers and supporters who make our work possible. It’s because of you that we’re able to do what we do each and every day: tell the stories of South Mississippi.
Happy reading—and Happy New Year! Here’s to making this our best year yet.
