The Monarchs are coming; those beautiful butterflies who pass through this area as they migrate. To celebrate them and spread awareness of these pollinators, Butterflies
in the Pass Monarch Festival will take place September 30 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in War Memorial Park in Pass Christian.
This event will feature speakers, educational exhibits, hands on activities for all ages and
a walking parade for anyone in butterfly regalia, including pets.
“The goal of the festival is to educate our community about Monarch butterflies and other pollinators and what we can do to help

them thrive,” says committee member Wendy Allard. “We call it environmental literacy. It's strictly a small educational festival.”
The Market in the Park will take place at the same time and will have butterfly themed items for sale. If the weather is bad, the event will be moved to the Pass Christian Library located at 111 Hiern Avenue.
Sponsors include the Pass Christian Library, Friends of the Pass Christian Library, the City of Pass Christian, Market in the Park, the Pass Christian Garden Club, Coast Coca-Cola Bottling Unit and Pass Christian Main Street.

What if everyone in Pass Christian read the same book and then joined together to talk about it? That is the idea behind One Book, One Pass. This will be the seventh year for the community project with Kiese Laymon's “Heavy: An American Memoir” as the selection.
“Over the next several months, the community is encouraged to read the book and engage in discussions, panels and other programs that will culminate in the author presentation on November 2 at 6:30 p.m. at the Randolph Center in Pass Christian,” said committee member Wendy Allard. “We always choose a book that is appropriate for all ages and that's
available in paperback. We are blessed to have the support of the James and Madeline McMullan Foundation.”
Laymon is a Mississippi writer from Jackson. He is the Libbie Shearn Moody Professor of English and Creative Writing
at Rice University. His book “Long Division” won the 2022 NAACP Image Award for fiction, and the essay collection, “How to Slowly Kill Yourself and Others in America,”was named a notable book of 2021 by the New York Times critics.
The author has received numerous awards and honors including the Andrew Carnegie Medal for Excellence in Nonfiction.
