The Mary C.
story by Victoria Snyder
This fall, The Mary C. O’Keefe Cultural Arts Center has something for
everyone. They have not just one, but two new exhibits going on now and through October.
One exhibit entitled Concept to Costume tells the story of Coastal costume designers Becky Rutz and Gloria Gaines. The show will display over
30 years’ worth of costumes that the
two have created for local theatrical productions and walk attendees through their process,
showing how these handmade costumes were designed from the beginning, brainstorming stages
of design all the way to the final,
finished product.
The second exhibit, Show Me What You Got, brings together 10 Local Creatives’ works brought together into one incredible show. The
show focuses on the variety of
mediums they use to create their
extraordinary art. These mediums
include acrylic, watercolor, wood
turnings, marquetry, ceramic
sculptures, dishware, glass pieces, photography, and more.

Formerly known as Hancock Whitney Splash Bash, Mississippi Aquarium’s annual fundraiser is back after a one-year hiatus! Returning this fall, the event will have a fresh new look, feel, and name: “Hancock Whitney Sea of Stars.” Scheduled for Friday, October 1, 2021, from 5-9 p.m. at Gulfport’s waterfront Jones Park, the free to attend community celebration will feature food, music, and a stellar first-of-its-kind-on- the-Coast drone lights and fireworks show.
“Mississippi Aquarium is a showpiece for Coastal Mississippi, our state, and our region,” said Hancock Whitney Mississippi Regional President Emory Mayfield. “With its commitment to education, conservation, community, and research, Mississippi Aquarium provides an awe-inspiring experience as
a major draw for visitors from around the nation
and world. We are very proud to partner with the Aquarium to present ‘Hancock Whitney Sea of Stars’ to help this extraordinary facility continue to tell the incredible stories of Mississippi’s aquatic resources and the amazing wildlife that calls those habitats home.”
Attendees can purchase food from one of 20 food trucks lining Jones Park, presented by the Gulfport Chamber of Commerce and food provider partners. Food truck vendors will open at 5 p.m., with live music by Rhythm & Rain.
