How do I gain distance off the tee? This is the million-dollar question
I am constantly asked. Obviously, getting some current technology and a good shaft are absolutely necessary. If you have already done this and still crave more, then you need to understand the importance of center contact and attack angle.
Everyone knows hitting it solid is important, but what people don’t seem to do is experiment with different lengths by simply choking down different amounts on the club. I find people hit it more in the middle of the club face when they choke down on the driver. Keep in mind that drivers today are much longer than they were 10 to 20 years ago. The solid contact will out weigh the slightly less club speed you lose by choking down.
The next thing you need to understand is attack angle. Simply put, this is a measurement on whether you are catching the ball on the downswing or as the club
is already on its way up. If you are catching the ball on too much of a descending blow, you are robbing yourself of precious yards. So if you can simply catch the ball on a slight upswing, the ball will go farther. This can be done by setting up with a tilt in your spine and making sure the ball is far enough forward in your stance. This being said, you may want to get with an instructor to insure you are doing it correctly.
