LETTERS to the editor
LETTER from the editor
The special section this month, Women in Business, is a
tribute to the many women who fulfill a myriad of roles in South Mississippi. Their accomplishments are astounding
and note worthy. We’ve learned that every facet of Coast life has a woman’s touch. They’re running military bases, county government, medical and dental practices, advertising agencies, industries, publications and boutiques. Really, what an impressive bunch they are!
IN MEMORIUM
And that’s coming from someone who believes exclamation points should be used very sparingly, lest they lose their purpose.
Of course the regular sections of South Mississippi Living are not ignored either. There are lots of interesting brief stories in Coast Notes, including one about an amazing young man who completed a bike ride from Washington state
to Washington, D.C. for charity.
September is Restaurant Month, a new promotion of the
Coast Chapter of the Mississippi Hospitality and Restaurant Association. It’s sure to lure residents from their homes to enjoy the area’s many restaurants. We’ve got the scoop in the Dining section.
In Sports & Outdoors we have a piece on hiking trails in the area and a tailgating story — complete with a couple of good recipes — to kick off the football season.
Speaking of kicking, a number of Coast women have taken up kickboxing for fun, fitness and self defense. There’s a story with great photos in the Healthy Living section, along with a piece about cholesterol education.
CLARIFICATION
In the August story, the names of the owners of Pop Brothers were listed incorrectly. The business is owned by Chuck Kelly and Shannon and Octavio Arzola.

We join people around the world in mourning the passing of jazz clarinet legend Pete Fountain.
He graced the cover of the rst edition of South Mississippi Living in December 2006.
He was born Pierre Dewey LaFontaine, Jr. in New Orleans and died there at the age of 86. He was a regular on television for many years before returning to New Orleans to play in his own night clubs. After the last one closed in 2003, he played at Casino Magic in Bay St. Louis where he had a home.
