When I think of the Caribbean, I envision warm sand, salty air, and the melodic sound of a steelpan. When
I think of Caribbean food, I imagine fragrant spices, fresh components, and a passion for cooking up something truly spectacular. In its role as a melting pot of culinary delight, the Gulf Coast is fortunate to experience
a continual uptick in new and diverse flavors. Lucky for us, a rise in authentic island cuisine is upon us.
Wagwan Jamaican Bistro is one of downtown Ocean Spring’s newest restaurants. Owner Kelvin Isaac and his wife, Marcia, are cooking up amazing, fresh food in a quaint and welcoming spot that will have you
appreciating the islands on a new
level. Kelvin, a native of Starkville,
is no stranger to the kitchen. Having previously served as the chef of Maison de Lu, Kelvin enjoys coming up with inventive takes on traditional meals. Marcia, on the other hand, was born and raised in Jamaica. She spent the last 14 years working as a chef in the Ocean Springs hospital cafeteria, although she knew she always had a passion for bringing her hometown food to the people of the Coast.
They wanted to work for themselves while giving the public something
new and exciting. After one meal at Wagwan, you’ll agree that they are accomplishing their goal.
