HEALING AT HO+ ME story by Alaysha Allen
In times of quarantining and social distancing, families should know ways to alleviate ailments at home. Anne Musgrove, Memorial Hospital nurse practitioner, gave her advice to help with four common a ictions families can treat at home:
“If symptoms include congested or running nose, sore throat,
or plugged ears, this is often a cold or a viral upper respiratory infection,” said Musgrove. “There are over-the-counter medications for this, but rest and hydration can soothe these symptoms as well.”
If symptoms last longer than ten days, Musgrove urges patients
to seek medical care. Also, see
a doctor if you develop a fever, cough, shortness of breath, or any other symptom lasting longer than a week.
Swelling with little bruising is a sign of a sprain. Ice several times a day for less than 20 minutes at a time, wrap with ACE bandages, and elevate; Aleve or Motrin can
help pain and swelling. Symptoms should not worsen after the rst week but may take up to six weeks to heal.
Stomach bugs or stomach viruses require uids. Musgrove says, “Gatorade and Pedialyte are great options, but those with diabetes should be aware of the sugar content in these drinks.” Emetrol and popsicles can help those who cannot hold down uids. A doctor
should assist if symptoms are severe, there is intense cramping, blood or mucous in the stool, or blood in their vomit, or if current symptoms persist or worsen after three days.
Musgrove says that minor cuts and scrapes do not require a clinic visit. “Clean the wound with soap or betadine to prevent infection; an ointment can also help. While actively bleeding, keep the wound covered, and apply pressure.”
While these treatments are typical, if symptoms become worse, seek medical help. Musgrove also advises doctor approval for over- the-counter medications if there is an underlying illness or preexisting condition.
