The Coast has always been a melting pot of food ideas and traditions, and
the Long Beach Market and Deli just may be the perfect example of that sort of funky, but fun, fusion. French and Spanish traditions became Creole, the Cajun and Vietnamese have blended into spicy goodness, but the Long Beach Market has taken local food ways, added roots of their own — European and Asian — and come up with a menu that will surely please everyone.
The menu includes po-boys, wraps, fried rice, kimchi fries, Kogi fries, sweet and sour, General Tso chicken, fried catfish, hummus and pita bread, and sides such as fried okra, red beans and rice, fried bananas, and Cajun fries. Need I go on?
Long Beach Market and Deli describe themselves as “Multi-Cuisine,” which is descriptive, but something a bit more specific seems needed. Korean-Coastal- Southern might work. Whatever the

nomenclature, the food is good and people line up for it.
General Tso chicken may be the perfect example, and it’s one of the best sellers. No one in China ever heard of this dish, but it is wildly popular in the USA. What could be wrong with fried chicken covered in a spicy sweet and hot sauce?
The Vietnamese inspired banh mi, a sandwich which the Vietnamese took from the colonial French and made their own, gets bumped up here by loading it with Korean BBQ. French, Vietnamese and Korean food ideas are combined
in an American way and turn out to be very good indeed.
But don’t get the idea that everything here is exotic. Red beans and rice is
also a best seller, as is the cheese burger and a handful of other classic American sandwiches. What could be more classic American than fries? Well, you just might guess that Long Beach Market
