FATHERS AND THEIR SONS story by Tommy Snell photo courtesy of Tim McCabe
Tim McCabe, Sr. wouldn’t let go as his son Tim “Timbo” McCabe scorched the back nine at the Country Club of Canton during the 2018 Father-Son/Daughter’s final round. The older McCabe put his arm around a sizzling 38-under par total to beat defending champions David and Edward Wall by a single shot. The Gulfport duo fired rounds of 58, 59 and
61 in the two-person, scramble format.
“Timbo’s putter was on fire on the back nine Sunday,” said the senior McCabe. Even though the older McCabe was eligible to play the forward tees, he stayed back with his son. “We wanted to win it with me on the same tees,” said Tim, Sr.
“I’ll let him go forward now that we’ve won it,” Timbo quipped. The McCabes have played in the event since 2001, and the closest they’ve come to winning was second in 2015. “I think I made over 70 feet of putts on the back nine Sunday, which is more than I made in the first two days combined.”
“It’s really surreal to win with my dad,” the younger McCabe added. “We didn’t have any expectations.
Father and son winners
Tim McCabe, Sr. and Tim “Timbo” McCabe.
Spending three or four days with your dad and friends is special. We always eat dinner with the Snells and the Sundermans, and those are special times.” Eating
at Tico’s Steakhouse has become an annual event for the Coast’s contingent. The Boothbys and the Cockrells joined the group in Tico Hoffman’s special “Back Room.”
Scott Rhodes and daughter Reagan of Ridgeland won the Father-Daughter Flight with
a three-day total of 28-under
par. The first two rounds were played at Patrick Farms Golf Club and Deerfield Country Club respectively, and a good time was had by all 160 players.
Even though the hope of winning a trophy rides to the course with every participant,
having fun and spending family time on and off the links tee off first. Paul Asay once wrote, “Forget Batman: when I really thought about what I wanted to be when I grew up, I wanted to be my dad.” Tim, Sr. might want to play golf like his son, but for Timbo, being like his dad is par for the course.
