it is returning to the Coast, offering “The long term goal is to continue expanding nonstop flights from Gulfport to local air service options to attract more visitors
Orlando, beginning August 30.
“We’re thrilled to announce that we’re bringing
our unique brand of ultra-low-cost, convenient travel to the Mississippi Gulf Coast,” said Lukas Johnson, Allegiant senior vice president of commercial service. “We know that travelers in this region are eager to have a convenient connection to all that Orlando has to offer, and we are excited to offer nonstop service at a fare everyone can afford.”
The new flights will be offered twice a week between Gulfport-Biloxi International Airport (GPT) and Orlando Sanford International Airport (SFB). With one-way rates as low as $29, seating will be limited. Allegiant will also offer travel to Norfolk, Virginia, and Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
“Having low cost air service from Allegiant
will help enhance the growth of Gulfport-Biloxi International Airport and Mississippi Gulf
Coast tourism attractions. We are pleased South Mississippi residents will have the ability to easily access the exciting tourism offerings in and around Orlando and greatly appreciate Allegiant flying from our market,” said Clay Williams, executive director, Gulfport-Biloxi International Airport.
Not only will Coast locals have inexpensive
and convention business and to provide residents with more convenient, affordable air service options,” said Michael Bruffey, deputy director of the Mississippi Gaming & Hospitality Association (MGHA). “There is no doubt that expanding air service will not only serve to improve the local economy, but will also improve the quality of life for those living along the Gulf Coast.”
Allegiant’s return to the Coast is thanks to the time and effort of many, including state leaders, MGHA and its casino members. “Many of the Association’s casino members have signed letters assuring the Mississippi Development Authority (MDA) and Allegiant of their commitment to use the air service,” Bruffey said. “Allegiant is the first air carrier to apply for the incentives provided
by the state through the Economic Development Infrastructure Fund, a state program funded with $2.5 million in BP settlement dollars that is administered by MDA.
“The financial return for the casinos is not a big number, but the overall financial impact to the region is significant. The mindset is that if our region thrives, then all of the businesses, casinos included, will thrive as well.”
