NUTRIA PEOPLE. A departure from the usual subject matter for artist Michelle Allee and photographer Ann Madden.
I feel it is the right thing to do to honor these beautiful creatures that were taken
by Hurricane Isaac.
Michelle Allee, Mississippi Gulf Coast Artist
the Torpedo Factory in Alexandria, Va., the Gail Keenan Art Center at Coast Episcopal School in Long Beach and at Slow Exposure 2013 in Pike County, Ga.
For both women, this work is a departure from their usual subject matters, but their teamwork has resulted in a happy joint venture. “When Michelle approached me
to try to create the habitat of these creatures via photographs, it made me take pause,” Madden said. “The images from ‘The Beauty of the Beast’ stem from the transformation that came from the devastation of a storm. The landscape and its changes have
a new beauty; a new perspective, maybe, that can only be seen when removed from the storm when nature reclaims itself.”
The August 19 reception will have
a Pop-Up Burger dinner occurring simultaneously on the plaza just outside the Center for Ceramics. Pop- up restaurants have been gaining popularity across the country. Chef Patrick Heim began his foray into this trend four years ago at the Redding House in Biloxi. Now he’ll participate in this event by offering his popular Pop-Up Burger night. Pop-Up restaurants put a new spin on the traditional dining experience by offering carefully curated menus in non-traditional settings. The
word is spread by social media, and because friends invite friends, it becomes less formal and more festive.
