and the kitchen was completely redone. Kennedy says that’s because Mary is a cookaholic and wanted a more workable arrangement.
Although the kitchen is a room where many tasks are performed, it’s soothing with a palate of gray and white. The large windows look out on the lawn and nearby water and have a window seat complete with a toy chest so the children can play while Mary cooks.
A favorite space for the Smiths is the mud room/laundry/home office that was designed within existing space. Storage space, wall pegs and a built-in desk add to the room’s efficiency. Cabinets are painted dark gray and the uncovered windows reveal the well-kept grounds outside.
From the front door the home is entered through a foyer with a vaulted ceiling. This space opens up to the lovely living room with an abundance of natural light spilling through the large windows — and outside is that fabulous water view. Curved glass tops each window, a feature that Kennedy says one architect they consulted wanted to change. Fortunately, the couple didn’t listen to him.
The living room and dining area have soft colors in shades of white, gray and beige. There are lots of natural fabrics such as linen and burlap. Unusual chandeliers add interest overhead. A music
room with a baby grand piano is open to the dining room and has the same sense of serenity the other rooms have.
There are also great windows in the master bedroom with a view to those great outside vistas. Wainscoting and paneling were added to the master bath, along with a double vanity — a feature that Mary says helps their marriage.
The family is complete with little Kennedy, 5 years, and Cecilia Capritto (Cece), 18 months. Young Kennedy’s room has a nautical theme with boat oars and yachting flags on the wall.
Mary compliments Kennedy, who’s vice president of marketing for Harrah’s Gulf Coast, by saying, “He has a vision and narrows it down to reach that vision.”
He also likes yard work, something that’s evidenced by the carefully groomed lawn and shrubs.
