Fly Fishing Offers Anglers Many Challenges, Rewards
Many people begin fly fishing for the challenge. Others like fighting large, powerful fish on light tackle. In many ways, fly fishing almost resembles hunting. Enthusiasts must stalk their prey one at a time and present a temptation to an individual fish.
“People can catch anything on a fly that they can catch on conventional tackle, but fly fishing is more of a challenge,” explains “Wild” Bill Hancock with Reel Outlaw Charters in Gulfport. “It’s more one-on-one with a fish. Fly fishing is almost an art form. It’s all about presentation. It’s kind of a spot and stalk sport. People who do it really enjoy it.”
People interested in learning more about fly fishing might consider joining a club. Besides being a fishing
guide, Hancock serves as the vice president of the Historic Ocean Springs Saltwater Fly Fishing Club, better known as HOSSFly. Club members meet monthly at the Ocean Springs Yacht Club. Members hear speakers addressing various topics such as fly casting, fly tying or conservation issues.
“The Historic Ocean Springs Saltwater Fly Fishing Club has been dedicated to conservation and promoting the fun of fly fishing for many years,” Hancock details.
