FROM THE editor’s desk
It’s hot outside, and that can only mean one thing: summertime in South Mississippi. So much has changed these days, but for better or for worse, the heat and humidity have remained the same.
Frizzy hair and scorching steering wheels aside, I’m happy for the arrival of summer. Kids are out of school at a time when they would normally be out anyway, making things feel just a bit more normal. Businesses are coming back to life, downtowns are no longer empty. It’s a refreshing sight despite the balmy weather.
This month we’re celebrating our local businesses through two special sections: Business & Industry and Main Streets, Chambers & Downtowns. Featured on the cover is the Port of Gulfport, which imports so many bananas annually that they could circle the globe 22 times! Read more about the port and many other economic powerhouses in the Business & Industry section.
Main Streets, Chambers & Downtowns is just that. You’ll read about the amazing small businesses and local organizations
that keep our downtowns thriving. What developments are underway and how are we attracting future generations? Kicking off this section is a letter from Thomas Gregory, state coordinator of the Mississippi Main Street Association.
The Hancock County Parade of Homes has been rescheduled for this month, and this year’s homes are featured within the pages of South Mississippi Living. Safety is always the top priority, which is why this year’s parade is also available virtually at www.hancockmsmyhome.com.
