and Bayou Concrete recently celebrated the “topping out” of the Aquatic Wonders building. Topping out ceremonies are traditionally held in construction when the last beam or roof is placed on the tallest building
on the construction site. The structural steel for the Aviary has also been installed.
“Mississippi Aquarium will be home to an interactive bird aviary where guests will be able to get
up close with a variety of colorful and beautiful exotic birds,” said Kendra Simpson, vice president
of sales and marketing. “The aquarium’s unique campus creates an outdoor experience for guests to interact with all of the different
species that call the aquarium home.”
The aquarium is also preparing for its second annual Hancock Whitney Splash Bash for Mississippi Aquarium on September 27. This year’s theme is “Year of the Croc” and will focus on the endangered American crocodile, which will be one of the Aquarium’s spotlight exhibits.
“After 2,000 plus partygoers helped debut the first Splash Bash last year, the second annual over- age-21 fundraiser party will again feature great food and drinks, music by Chinatown, and wildlife in attendance, some of which will soon call Mississippi Aquarium home,” said Simpson.

St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Elementary School students celebrated National Police Officers Day by inviting officers from local units to attend. Students and staff honored the 30 officers in attendance during the morning assembly, fondly called “Prayer and Pledge.” Students made and presented cards to
the officers, thanked them, and shared handshakes. The officers joined the students’ morning praise and then were treated to a simple reception in the cafeteria.
In the week prior to National Police Officers Day, the school held a Free Dress Day to raise money for fallen Biloxi Patrolmen, Robert McKeithen. Students paid $3 to wear non-uniform clothes, and teachers paid $3 to wear jeans. The school collected over $1,200 to send to Officer McKeithen’s family.
“We know that we are called to serve, not to be served. These officers serve us and all the citizens along the Mississippi Gulf Coast every day,” Principal Carol Church told the student body, faculty, and parents gathered for the assembly, adding, “It is our pleasure to do a little something to show our appreciation.”
