MEET OUR SOUTH MISSISSIPPI
Cover Models
Modeling ability might not be a prerequisite to joining the military or being a first responder, but this month’s cover models did a fantastic job. However, these dedicated civil servants say they still aren’t quitting their day jobs – helping others is their true calling. We asked the models to give us the inside scoop on being a community hero. Here’s what they had to say:
story by Kelsey Sunderman-Foster photos by James Edward Bates
SPENCER TOBLER, Keesler Air Force Base, Photo Journalist
What makes a community hero?
A community hero is someone who devotes themselves to protecting and helping other people.
What do you love most about your job?
Being able to see the big picture – what’s going on in
the Air Force as a whole, not just one section of it. I enjoy getting to interact with people from other areas within the Air Force who all come together for the same mission.
ALYSSA SELGA, Naval Construction Battalion Center Gulfport, Builder
What makes a community hero?
A community hero is someone who isn’t afraid to stand up for what’s right and make necessary changes within society.
What do you love most about your job?
Being around amazing people from all walks of life. I learn something new every day, and every day brings something different.
EDWARD RESH, Harrison County Fire, Fire ghter/EMT
What makes a community hero?
A community hero is someone who leads through actions, not just by telling others what to do. A real hero isn’t afraid to get out there and do the hard work themselves.
What do you love most about your job? Never knowing what the next call will be. I enjoy meeting new people and knowing that I have a great team that I can rely on.
CHERRY ANTHONY, Acadian Ambulance, Operations Supervisor/Paramedic
What makes a community hero?
A community hero is someone who
can be part of a team and do whatever
needs to be done to complete the job
successfully. No one person does it
alone.
What do you love most about your
job? Being able to lead a great team of people who always give their best.
MICHAEL PLITSCH, Gulfport Coast Guard Station, Gunner’s Mate
What makes a community hero?
A community hero is someone who is self confident and can instill that confidence in others to grow future leaders.
What do you love most about your
job? Helping others succeed in
weapons proficiency. I enjoy seeing others do well and being able to pass on my knowledge.
