There is really only one word that describes Le Café Beignet, and that is classy. Spanish Colonial revival architecture, an intimate setting, and a killer good menu like you will find nowhere else.
Le Café Beignet describes itself as Southern gourmet, but I want to dig a little deeper than that. There is no doubt that it’s Southern, but Creole would be more specific with just the right touch of French, hints of Low Country, and a garnish of Cajun spice to finish it off. It’s a great combination.
Before we take a quick look at the menu, I have to say a word about the chef and general manager. Chef Alonzo O’Kelly is as talented a chef as I have ever encountered. I didn’t get a lot of time to talk to him during my visits — he is way too busy — but he nailed the food every time. His London broil is the
best I’ve ever had, and his attention to detail, from plating to seasoning is spot on. Three cheers for this remarkable chef!
Of course you do not want to visit Le Café without trying the beignets. A cup of really good coffee and a beignet or two, and you will be on top of the world. The beignets are handmade with a family recipe, of course.
Everything on the menu is good, but I highly recommend the sandwiches. The South Mouth, perhaps the best sandwich I have ever had anywhere, is stunningly good. London broil, grilled bell peppers and onions, lots of melted cheese and a remoulade sauce. The Morning Sandwich, served on ciabatta with Gouda, Low Country style quiche and applewood bacon is amazing. I also saw an oyster po-boy that appeared to be perfection in all aspects. Big, juicy
