Kenny Galavan, Biloxi City Councilman, going over the edge at IP Casino Resort Spa.
A total of $62,224 was raised for the second Hang Out with Habitat which had 43 volunteers going ‘over the edge’ as they rappelled from the 32nd floor of IP Casino Resort Spa — 300 feet. The ‘edgers,’ sponsors, donors and 44 volunteers were honored at a celebration breakfast at IP.
Some 560 donors made contributions to the ‘edgers’ to help them raise
a minimum of $1,000 each for the opportunity to rappel.
Prizes were awarded to Rick Graham of Huntington Ingalls Shipbuilding for raising the most money at $4,125; Jim Smith who placed second with $2,855; and Steve Poppendieck who secured the most donors.
“This marks the second year for this unique fundraising event that
raises funds to support Habitat
for Humanity’s efforts to provide affordable housing opportunities
for hard working families on the Gulf Coast,” said Chris Monforton, CEO of Habitat for Humanity of
the Mississippi Gulf Coast. “We are starting to plan the third Hang Out with Habitat event and look forward to having many participants.”
The IP Casino Resort Spa presented Habitat officials with a check for $6,000 which was raised by employees to send several members of the IP staff over the edge. The Biloxi Little Theater presented a check to Habitat for $300 that was collected during the theater’s performance the weekend of Hang Out with Habitat.
Habitat for Humanity of the
Mississippi Gulf Coast was formed
in January 2007 when the Harrison County and Jackson County Habitat chapters merged. Since that time, the organization has incorporated Stone County into its service area and has constructed or repaired more than 945 homes.
