the morning, turns on the bedroom lights and the coffee maker, in addition to making noise like a typical alarm clock. “The lights in the master closet and bathroom are activated by motion. If it’s after 10 p.m., only a couple of lights turn on at a low dim level. The powder room is also motion activated so guests don’t need to fumble for a wall switch.
“The ability to get ready in the morning and tell the house to ‘turn off everything’ as we step out is much easier than hitting all the switches,” Ulku said. “We can turn the television on without searching for the remote by just saying ‘turn on the television.’ The voice recognition is good enough that our four-year- old son can ask the house to play the soundtrack to Disney’s Frozen and it will start playing.”
The house with all of this state- of-the-art technology backs up
to a densely wooded area that is visible from all the rear windows, lending a sense of serenity that this couple didn’t have in their Houston home before moving to Gulfport in February.
Caleb is of Finnish descent and was reared in North Dakota. Leena grew up in Biloxi and is a physician at Memorial Hospital where her father, Dr. Purushhottam Pande, is also employed. Caleb and Leena met in Houston where he was a chemical
engineer with Exxon Mobile and she was finishing Tulane Medical School, which was temporarily relocated to Houston after Hurricane Katrina. Caleb’s engineering degree is from New York Cooper University, and he has an MBA from the University of Chicago.
They are the parents of four-year- old Sam and 11-months-old Anaya — part of the reason for their move from Houston. “We were killing ourselves in Houston,” Caleb said. “We had long commutes and it was hectic. Things are better here and we are near Leena’s parents who live in Biloxi.”
In addition to adding SmartHouse features, the couple put their stamp on the home with color updates
and a change of lighting fixtures.
The master bedroom and closet
were enlarged, making space for a dressing room and a mini kitchen that’s perfect for the morning’s
first coffee and the evening’s last glass of wine. The dressing room includes lighted storage and elegant padded seating. In the bathroom, there’s a television in the mirror over Leena’s vanity. She likes to watch the morning news while dressing.
The renovation of the Ulkus’
home was managed by Arthaus and interior designer Gail Majure helped with the color selections. Additional decorating assistance came from Tony Whaley at Ole River Fabrics.
TRADITIONAL AND CONVENTIONAL styles mesh with contemporary ones in this state-of-the-art smart home. Hardwood oors, exposed brick and neutral color schemes throughout the kitchen and living areas make it very comfortable and perfect for entertaining.
