The Bay Night Ride is at 5:30 p.m. on the second Saturday of
each month from May through October. This ride begins in Pass Christian and follows a designated bike route across the bridge to Bay St. Louis, and riders return after sunset with lights.
At the Vintage Bike Show there were many unique bicycles to appreciate, including an antique high-wheeler and a 1917 wooden- wheeled Excelsior. Perhaps the most unusual was a bicycle- built-for-six. Owned by Gayle Childers of Gulfport, the bike was discovered in a barn after Hurricane Katrina.
“I traded contracting services for it,” Childers said. “All I know for certain is that it’s more than 25 years old and my grandsons love to ride it.”
Several riders attempted to ride the contraption down the street but, unfortunately, the required coordination could not be mustered by any six at one time. Three riders did finally manage to get the bike moving along a straight line.
Gene Peters, who has owned EcoGeno bicycle shop in Biloxi for four years, was pleased the club put forth the effort to host the event. “I think it’s long overdue,” he said. “You can look at the attendance and see how successful it is. There are many people involved in various aspects of bicycling and they’d love to get together with others who have the same interests; we just haven’t had an event to accommodate that.”
