Destruction from the 2013 devastating tornado that roared through several towns north of the Coast, including Wiggins, has resulted in a positive change for Girl Scouts of South Mississippi.
The Girl Scouts of Greater Mississippi recently opened a beautiful new facility in Wiggins thanks to a partnership with Yates Construction. The Girl Scout Lodge, a 9,500-square-foot multi-purpose building, replaces two buildings that were destroyed. The Lodge is located at Camp Iti Kana, which is used by Girl Scouts from across the state.
“We were so fortunate to work with the team at Yates Construction; everyone was wonderful on this project,” said Becky Traweek, CEO of the Girl Scouts of Greater Mississippi. “The 10,000 members we serve will enjoy this facility for many years to come. We use our camp for weekend events and camps year round. Camp Iti Kana is the heart of our special events.”
David McMurphy served as project manager. The national Girl Scouts CEO, Anna Chavez, made a special visit to Mississippi and toured the new facility.

It’s time to shake it up for wishes and a good time at the Martini Shakedown on July 11 at the Beau Rivage Resort. Doors open at 7 p.m. for this Coast casual event that raises funds for Make-A-Wish Mississippi.
“This is a can’t-miss event that will have everyone rockin’ as they sip some of the best martinis and are entertained by the one and only Bag of Donuts out of New Orleans – back by popular demand — all while helping our mission of making wishes come true for our Mississippi kids,” said Shellie Moses, South Mississippi director.
The event will feature an array of tempting food prepared by the Beau Rivage’s chefs and a silent auction with amazing vacation getaway packages, unique one-of-a-kind items and Martini gift packages.
Make-A-Wish Mississippi is a non-profit organization that grants wishes to children suffering from life-threatening medical conditions. The Make-A-Wish Foundation of Mississippi is proudly celebrating 30 years of making magical wishes come true for Mississippi children.
Advance tickets start at $75 per person and are $100 after July 9. A limited number of corporate sponsorships are available.
