SPORTS & OUTDOORS
So, you’re not interested in being some super athlete, but you want a healthy lifestyle, and you enjoy being outdoors? Staying healthy doesn’t have to involve grueling gym workouts or high-intensity competitions. Coastal Mississippi offers tons of different ways to enjoy
the outdoors that provide a refreshing approach to wellness.

Walks on the beach have to be number one! Just look at any dating profile; everyone enjoys these. And the Coast offers miles of sidewalks right along the sea wall, perfect for a stroll. I like to go closer to the water where the sand is firm, it’s amazing this short distance from the road, the traffic noise is practically nonexistent. I instantly feel the stress leaving my body.
Walking is a low-impact exercise that not only improves your cardiovascular health but boosts your mood and relieves stress.
Birdwatching. Yes, seriously, birdwatching. It’s great for people who prefer a slower pace, combining relaxation with the thrill of discovery. It also sneaks in a lot of hiking you don’t notice because you’re busy searching the trees and skies. All you need is a field guide and a pair of binoculars and you’re ready. This hobby encourages mindfulness and attentiveness as you focus on the sights and sounds of the avian world. Spending this time outdoors and connecting with nature improves mental health and well-being.
Gardening offers a surprising array of physical activities, digging and planting, weeding and watering. These tasks gently exercise the body and improve strength, flexibility and coordination.
Gardening is also known to reduce stress and promote relaxation, making it an excellent activity if you’re looking to unwind. Plus, you get the added bonus of home-grown tomatoes and peas all summer long!
Here are some ideas for non-athletes to enjoy the outdoors while also working on their health and wellness.
