Meet the Doctors is undoubtably one of our biggest issues of the year. It is a chance to get to know the people behind the masks and stethoscopes – the everyday heroes who heal us, our friends, our loved ones.
This year’s cover is extra special to us because of the two beautiful women gracing it. On the left is Xuan “Katherine” Sowers, who has been a photographer with our magazine for 10 years. In September of 2022, she was diagnosed with stage two breast cancer and as her work family, we were heartbroken and afraid alongside her own family: her husband, Trevor, and their son, William.
Pictured next to Katherine is one of the Coast’s many healthcare heroes, Dr. Allison Wall, an oncologist with Hematology Oncology Partners, a part of Memorial Health System. We cannot thank Dr. Wall enough
for the kindness, empathy, and knowledge that saved Katherine’s life. Thanks to Dr. Wall and her amazing team, Katherine has now been cancer-free for one year.
Stories like this aren’t unique to us – they’re being written each and every day. From the bottom of our hearts, Team SML would like to thank the many health care professionals of the Coast for their dedication to caring for our community. Reading about them, you’ll notice that many of them devote their days to helping those in need of medical care, and their free time is spent in much the same way. Community involvement is a common thread among these heroes, and one that often goes unnoticed.
So please join us in celebrating these amazing men and women, today and every day. Donate meals to hospitals and medical offices if you can, and share kind words of appreciation and encouragement with them whenever possible.
