DENTAL
ANXIETY

It’s the time of the year to “shake out” your summer clothes for fun outdoor activities! A beautiful, bright smile can help you get ready for sunny weather. A dental cleaning and whitening are simple ways to have a “sunny” smile all year long.
If the idea of visiting your dentist makes you queasy, you are not alone. Twenty percent of Americans worry before going to the dental office, which is the primary reason for many skipped dental appointments. Every individual has their own reason for fearing the dentist, but often times it’s because of
a past negative experience, fear of pain, sound of the dental drill or just plain embarrassment from neglected dental care. These are all valid reasons and your dentist and dental team are often trained to help you overcome these issues. Here are some tips for addressing dental fears and phobias so that you can have the beautiful smile that you deserve:
Seek out dental practices that cater to people with dental phobias. Often, the dental team will work with you to address all of your fears and offer treatments to help you to be less anxious.
Choose an office that offers things such as television, music, and warm blankets.
Take a family member or friend with you to your first appointment so that you’ll know that they are there supporting you.
Use relaxation techniques such as breathing exercises or imagery.
Ask your dental team about appropriate sedation options. Oral sedatives and nitrous oxide (happy gas) are available in many dental offices.
Ask questions. Dental teams with experience in providing care to anxious patients don’t mind addressing all of your concerns and often set aside time to discuss these concerns.
Take a break when needed. Usually, a trained dental team member will ask you during your appointment.
Be assured that most dental offices today specialize in making you comfortable and will work with you to keep your smile “sunny” all year long! Beach View family dental will work with you to achieve the smile you have always wanted in a calm, compassionate and caring environment.
