June 21 is officially the first day of summer but in South Mississippi we don’t need a calendar to tell us there’s been a change of seasons. School is out bringing summer fun, camps, outdoor activities and vacations. For South Mississippi Living it’s
the month for the annual Meet The Doctors special section, a comprehensive guide to who’s doing what in local health care. We are blessed with a wealth
of medical knowledge and specialists here.
Along with informative profiles of health care professionals, the special section has interesting feature stories that include choosing a specialty, getting a second opinion, ways to control the cost of medications, and a personality profile of Dr. Chelsea Grow.
We introduce two new columnists this month —
Tommy Snell, head golf coach
at Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College, who will write about golf in the Sports
& Outdoors section, and Julian Brunt, a food historian and restaurant reviewer, who will share his thoughts in Deep South Culinary Adventures in the Dining section.
Also new is the Marine
Education Center in Ocean
Springs at the University of Southern Mississippi’s Gulf Coast Research Lab. We have photos and a story in the Leisure section that illustrate the natural beauty of this environmentally-friendly campus.
Looking for ways to lure the kids away from electronics? The back yard activities suggested in a story in the Sports & Outdoors section should give you some ideas. And in this section, avid fisherman Frank Wilem gives some pointers on catching red snapper.
In the People section there’s a piece on a Coast Character who is well known, Bobby Mahoney. This Biloxi raconteur has a full repertoire of jokes and uses them to entertain diners at his family’s restaurant.
For this month’s feature home we travel to Bay St. Louis for a home that’s a real survivor and has been beautifully restored.
