house? Yes, there are two when Lainie and Jacob Jorns are present. Both are M.D.s and
graduates of Louisiana State University’s Medical School in Shreveport where they met. They are dedicated to health care and, because they understand each other’s careers, are able to combine those demands with family life. The family includes daughters Emma, 5, and Reagan, 18 months.
While they know they share many of the same stresses of all working parents, it’s helpful that both Jorns work in the
same field — a field that
has off-hour calls as well
as daily duties. “It’s an advantage that we’re both in medicine,” Lainie Jorns says. “When he calls and tells me he’ll be late, I know what he has to do.”
To that, Jacob Jorns adds, “With schedule changes,
we have to ask ‘how do we do this and not spoil things for 25 other people?’ It’s a delicate balance. We have to be able to adapt.”
Usually, the day begins with Jacob Jorns taking
the baby to day care and Lainie Jorns taking the oldest daughter to school. Although the two Doctor Jorns do not see each other during the work day, they touch base at noon to decide what’s for dinner that evening. Then check with each other later to see who’s picking up the children. “When we get home, it’s rush, rush, rush to get it all done, and then we do it all over again,” Lainie said. “However, we don’t take ourselves too seriously; that’s how we make it work.”
They enjoy family time and especially like to be outside with the children; sometimes riding bikes and going to the beach.
Lainie grew up in Cottonport, La., and Jacob
is from Pearl River, La., which is not far from the Mississippi Coast. “He knew this area well and that’s one reason we moved here,” Lainie said. “We wanted to get back close to home after residencies at the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Fla. We survive with our parents nearby.”
Lainie specialized in family medicine and since medical school has added palliative care as a specialty. “From
a young age, I wanted to take care of everybody,” she says. “I like getting to know patients and building relationships.”
Jacob specialized in urology. “It’s very diverse; never boring,” he said, “and I must have a good sense of humor because I get a lot of jokes about what I do.”
Both practice with Memorial Physician Clinics in Gulfport.
