COASTNOTES
SPOT A SHRIMP
Use the My Gulf Coast App and discover your next great memory on the Gulf Coast
story by Kelsey Sunderman-Foster
If you’ve seen the Shrimp Signs scattered across the Coast at the intersections on Highway 90, you may still be wondering what their purpose is. These handy markers are actually numbered to help locals and visitors locate
attractions in the
area, from dining to
entertainment and
accommodations.
In celebration of National Travel and Tourism Week, which took place in May, the official app for the Mississippi Gulf Coast was launched. The app, My Gulf Coast, is available through the App Store and Google Play, and will link users to Shrimp Sign information via their smart phones.
By pinpointing the
users’ locations, the app’s
interactive map will allow
them to locate nearby
businesses, as well as
show them current deals and offers that are available.
One of the app’s most exciting features is an itinerary builder, which lets users select their favorite locations and add them to their plans. My Gulf Coast also offers Scavenger Hunts, which are a fun, hands-on way to get people involved. Users will have the opportunity to complete various tasks and win prizes.

Junior Auxiliary of
Biloxi-Ocean Springs
story by Lynn Lofton
The Junior Auxiliary of Biloxi-Ocean Springs will host its 12th annual Gala for the Kids on June 16 at 7:00 p.m. in the Magnolia Ballroom of the Beau Rivage Resort & Casino. The event will be a Night of Pure Imagination, including live and silent auctions, split the pot raffle, delicious hors d’oeuvres, cash bar, live entertainment by Triggerproof, and much more.
Gala chairman Katie Widdows said, “Each year we strive to have one and only one fundraiser — Gala for the Kids. Through this event, we raise the funds needed to carry out all of our service projects for the coming year, and its success is critical to these projects. The more funds we raise, the more children and youth we can serve, and the larger impact we can make in their lives and future.”
This year, JA is on track to serve more than 10,000 children and families through 5,500 volunteer hours.
“We hope this whimsical Willy Wonka-inspired event will bring to life the child within all of us and serve as a reminder of how critical the service projects are that we provide to the children and families in our service area,” Widdows added.
