THE RACK HOUSE
STEAKS AND SPIRITS
The Rack House Steaks And Spirits
story and photos by Julian Brunt
Seldom will you find a restaurant with the ambiance of the Rack House. It’s raw and stained wood, exposed brick, high ceiling, and overstuffed chairs and couches huddled around the upstairs bourbon bar, seem to contrast with the huge expanse of large glass windows that look out south and west, but it doesn’t. It’s warm and inviting; it’s an Englishman’s private club, and certainly a rack house from which it takes its name, with its stacked barrels of fine aromatic bourbon aging for year upon year.
As soon as I walked in the restaurant and found my way upstairs, I knew that the next time I decided to sip on a
single barrel bourbon, I knew exactly where I was going to go. I visited with my partner, Lesley Fenton, and while she isn’t as fond of America’s whiskey as I am, she has a critical eye that far exceeds mine, not to mention palate (she is a culinary school grad and has years in the business), so just as soon as we started to see the beautifully plated food coming out of the kitchen, we
both agreed we were someplace special indeed.
Nothing gets me excited about a restaurant as much as seeing a well- appointed appetizer section on a menu, and Rack House scored high in this category. With hot and cold appetizers
