and two — start CPR by pushing on the patient’s chest at a rate of 100 to 120 compressions per minute. Christin LeBoeuf with the American Heart Association says the beat of the song “Stayin’ Alive” is a perfect match for CPR.
“You don’t know when you might need CPR,” she said. “We’re proud of the research, science and technology developed by the AHA that have led to hands-only CPR and other life-saving methods.”
Doyle cautions, “Don’t be afraid to help someone by using CPR. Mississippi has Good Samaritan laws that will protect you. Even if you break someone’s ribs, you saved their life.”
State law also mandates that graduating high school seniors must take
a course in CPR and this year’s class is the second to graduate with this training. “We’re adding 26,000 Mississippians to the roll of those who know how to administer CPR,” LeBoeuf said. “We’ll continue working with our partners and organizations to keep this number growing.”
According to Doyle, 70 percent of out-of-hospital cardiac arrests happen in homes. Unfortunately, only about 46 percent of people who experience an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest get the immediate help they need before professional help arrives.
