COAST NOTE
set to reopen
story by Alexis Williams
Just in time for summer, the Mary C. O’Keefe Cultural Center in Ocean Springs is working to reopen after changing the management structure. Those who enjoyed classes and camps at the Mary C. are in store for a new line-up when
the facility opens its doors to the public again.
Ocean Springs artist and business owner Sarah Qarqish has been hired by the City as the Arts and Culture Coordinator, and she is working diligently to bring people back into the
Mary C.’s theater and classrooms.
“We have had ongoing maintenance and recouping of
equipment to get the theater and kitchen back up and running,” said Qarqish. “Our partnerships are growing, and we are taking the proper steps to sign with them and make sure everyone is feeling good and prepared before we start up programs.”
Culinary arts classes will resume under the direction of Chef Demetrio with other chefs rotating through
the teaching kitchen. Swampgirl Glassblowing will
offer classes, Engraving Hub Studios will offer digital fabrication using laser cutters and the Ocean Springs Garden Club will teach horticulture classes. The Walter Anderson Theater Project plans to host a Rising Stars Youth Program to teach acting, dance, singing and style; local author Valerie Winn will teach a class focused on beginning writers; and painting and illustrations will be taught by artist Alexandra Keaton.
