30 volunteers from nine South Mississippi high school bass clubs were paired with nearly 20 special needs kids for the tournament.
At our Friday evening meet and greet, Shoemake Painting provided dinner. Then Saturday morning, the Kidz began fishing aboard a 26-foot Baytoon boat which easily accommodated the wheelchair based anglers while the rest fished off the bank or one of the nine boats provided by the Coast bass clubs. While the anglers took a break, Coastal Industrial Contractors served up a feast and even fried some of the fresh caught bass.
Down Syndrome doesn’t keep Will Gibbes
out of the action. The 17-year-old student at Ridgeland High School who regularly hunts and fishes with his dad, Denton, won the Kidz bass tournament’s largest released fish first place award with a seven-pound monster. He then went on to win the aggregate release weight with an impressive 19.5 pounds!
When the Sherwin Williams weigh master tallied the catch at the end of the day, the Kidz had removed more than 100 bass. Plus, they caught and released several larger fish ranging up to seven pounds. The special needs kids and their families had a wonderful time fishing and just being outdoors. The bass club kids enjoyed mentoring their Kidz buddies while fishing the lake. And Clay made progress toward achieving his fish removal goal. A win-win for everyone.
