It’s quite an accomplishment for a firm to be in business 50 years. The comprehensive consulting engineers
firm Brown, Mitchell &
Alexander is marking that milestone this year. With offices in Gulfport, Biloxi and Pascagoula, BMA provides professional civil engineering, surveying, drafting and environmental services to a wide variety of clients.
The company was started in 1967
by the late Joseph L. Brown, Jr. He
was joined by Bill Mitchell in 1987.
The firm became Brown, Mitchell &
Alexander when Dax Alexander joined in 2008.

The firm has also been involved with several casino projects. They were especially busy in the years following Hurricane Katrina. BMA provided services to Harrison and Hancock County Utility Authorities for repairs and water and sewer projects. They also designed one of the largest post- Katrina public improvement projects, the Bert Jones Yacht Basin and Jones Park improvements. For their work

Some of BMA’s notable projects include professional services for the $36 million MGM Park in Biloxi; street scape improvements to Gulfport’s downtown, including Fishbone Alley; original design and current expansion of the Gulfport Sportsplex; the new Chemours ilmenite
2012 Honor Award for Engineering Excellence from the American Council of Engineering
Companies.
The firm has evolved through the years to keep pace
with changing technology. There are 25 employees with engineers making up a third of that number.
Maggie Smith, a Mississippi State University engineering student, is working at BMA through the school’s coop program. “I’m learning a lot; everything you don’t learn in a classroom,” she said.
