WATERMARK
Gulfport attorney publishes rst novel
story by Lynn Lofton
Like many Coast residents Michael Hewes’ life was profoundly affected by Hurricane Katrina. He and his wife Kay lost the vintage Gulfport home they had restored, but they persevered and built a new home in the same location.
While sifting through the rubble, Hewes, an attorney practicing in Gulfport, developed an idea for a book set in the storm’s aftermath. His first novel, Watermark, debuts this month.
“The idea for the book came to me after finding some rather interesting things washed up in our yard,” he said. “It got me wondering, what
if something seriously problematic washed up after a hurricane? What
if it contained something that very powerful people would do anything — including murder — to keep out of the public eye?”
That’s what happens to the book’s main character, Matt Frazier, when he returns home to Gulfport after
a massive hurricane. Something washed up that unwillingly makes him the central target in a deadly conspiracy involving high-profile players.
Hewes will sign his book at S.F. Alman’s on May 7, 10 – 12 a.m., and Triplett-Day Drug Store on May
12, 9 – 11 a.m. Some of the book’s action takes place at these Gulfport
businesses. For more information, visit www.watermarkthebook.com.
