Tired Dog Rescue Fundraiser

Bright yellow ducks will race to help dogs on May 21 at the Tired Dog Rescue Duck Derby. The inaugural fundraiser begins at
12 noon at the Dock Bar & Grill
in Gulfport. It’s free and open
to the public and will feature live
music, food, children’s activities,
raffles, vendors and prizes in addition
to a minimum of 5,000 ducks released into the bayou. The first three ducks to cross the finish line will receive amazing prizes.
“We encourage families to come and enjoy all the activities,” said Terry Casillas, who founded the local Tired Dog Rescue unit eight years ago. “We hope to raise a lot of money so we can help in the community more.”
The organization’s veterinarian bills for last year were $47,000, and Casillas says they’re seeing an increase in the number of neglected, abandoned and abused dogs. “It feels like an uphill battle. With the economy leveling off, we don’t know what’s causing the increase.”
Tired Dog Rescue is an all-volunteer organization and works with foster homes to place dogs with families.

WAMA Annual Gala to be held May 12 at Beau Rivage story by Lynn Lofton
It’s off to ancient
Greece for this year’s
gala for the Walter
Anderson Museum
of Art on May 12.
The Iliad and The
Odyssey gala will
be held at the Beau
Rivage Resort &
Casino from 6 to 10
p.m. The band STELLAR will entertain.
The theme celebrates Anderson’s depictions of The Iliad and The Odyssey. “Walter loved to read and illustrate fables and fairytales, so he painted a large watercolor from the Iliad and the Odessy — as well as constructing a wooden boat with oars!” said Museum Executive Director Rosemary Roosa.
Auction items will include an original Walter Anderson drawing, Saints tickets, a Walter’s Wine Boat, the Elvis Suite at Gulf Hills Resort, paintings from local artists, jewelry, gift coupons to Coast restaurants, and an array of silent and live auction items.
“We’ll have Greek food, two free drink tickets for each person, and a station to purchase an etched WAMA gala glass,” Roosa said.
Mr. and Mrs. Erich Nichols are chairing the gala. For tickets and sponsorships, call or visit the WAMA website.
